A group of In-Spire Pilates students after a mat Pilates class in Prince Albert

The short answer

Pilates is a low-impact, full-body workout that builds strength from the inside out. You move slowly and with control, focusing on your core, your breath and good alignment — so you get stronger without pounding your joints.

Where Pilates comes from

Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. He called his method “Contrology” — the idea that a strong, controlled body and a focused mind work together. A century later, studios around the world still teach the same core principles: concentration, control, centring, precision, breath and flow.

What Pilates can do for you

  • A stronger core and better posture
  • More mobility and flexibility through your hips, spine and shoulders
  • Better balance and body awareness
  • Strength without heavy weights or high impact
  • A calmer mind — every move is linked to your breath

What a class at In-Spire looks like

Our classes are mat-based Pilates set to great music, using small props like Pilates balls. Some classes are taught in a HOT room for an extra sweat, others in a WARM room to help you stretch, and some at regular room temperature. Every class is all-levels — your instructor will show you how to make each move easier or harder.

Pilates vs. yoga

Both are mindful and breath-led, but they feel different. Yoga focuses more on holding poses, flexibility and meditation. Pilates is more about controlled strength — especially your core — with lots of small, precise movements that really make you work. Many people love doing both.

Do I need to be flexible or fit?

Nope. You don't need to be flexible, strong or experienced to start — that's what Pilates builds. If you're brand new, In-Power Pilates or Warm In-Flex are great first classes. Have an injury or are pregnant? Check with your doctor first and let your instructor know before class.

Why coming often matters

Pilates rewards consistency. Two or three classes a week is where most people start to notice real changes in strength and posture. That's why class packs and memberships bring your price per class down — so showing up is easier.
